For most consumer SaaS, an open-source self-hostable alternative now exists. For about a third of them, the alternative is genuinely better — same or better UX, plus the data lives on your hardware. For another third, the alternative is workable but rougher than the commercial product, worth running if you're already running other services. For the final third, self-hosting is a non-starter and pretending otherwise is a hobby project, not a practical answer. This page sorts the landscape by what each replacement is for rather than by who makes it: notes and documents, communication and chat, files and media, and the infrastructure substrate (mesh networking, reverse proxies, SSO, monitoring) that any homelab eventually needs. One deliberate omission: enterprise-only categories (full CRM stacks, BI suites) are not covered — those have their own self-hosted answers but the comparison set is so different it would mislead a personal-use reader.
An honest map of which SaaS categories have self-hosted alternatives that actually work in 2026.
