Instagram poetry made poetry commercially visible again and critically invisible at the same time; the interesting work happens in journals, small presses, and prize shortlists most readers never encounter. This is a working map for somebody who liked poetry once, lost track of it, and wants back in: where the good new work actually appears, which presses function as reliable filters, which living poets reward a full collection rather than a screenshot, and where the criticism worth reading lives. I have deliberately left out the major Instagram poets; the point of this page is the layer of the art the algorithm does not surface.
The publications that still function as the field's filter. A subscription to one or two of these replaces a hundred algorithmic feeds.
In poetry, the press is the taste. These five have earned the right to make you buy a book on the strength of the colophon alone.
Not a canon, a starting five: poets whose books work as books, for a reader coming back to the art. Canonical picks and a couple of bets.
Poetry criticism is quietly in a strong period. These are the places where the field argues with itself in public.
The annual instruments that compress the year's output into a readable shortlist. Imperfect filters, but filters.
