A field guide to AI agent frameworks — what’s actually shipping in 2026

"Agents" became the buzzword of late 2024 and stayed that way through 2026. The framework landscape has been chaotic in proportion — every major lab and a dozen startups shipped their own agent abstractions, most of them either rebranded LangChain or oversold demos. The actual landscape in 2026 is smaller and clearer once you sort through it: a handful of frameworks that are genuinely production-grade, a handful useful for prototyping but not deployment, the surrounding tooling for evaluation and observability that any serious agent system needs, and the writers worth following to keep current. This page sorts them by what each is actually used for in production. One deliberate omission: vertical agent products (legal research, customer support, etc.) are excluded — those are applications of agents, not frameworks for building them, and would muddy the focus on the infrastructure layer.

An opinionated map of agent frameworks for production vs. prototyping, plus eval and observability.
